Researchers of fantasy as well as of children's literature can rejoice: the newest Inklings Yearbook is now ready for download! The series of annual conference proceedings of the Inklings Society is well-established among scholars interested in the Oxford Inklings as well as a widening scope of research on fantasy literature, speculative fiction and more. Articles analysing games, films and TV series with methodologies from Cultural Studies, Games Studies, Film and Media Studies have since found their home in the Yearbook as well.
Volume 42 revisits the talks given at the 2024 Inklings conference in Malberg under the two-fold headline "Fantasy for Children – Children in Fantasy". Hence, the works addressed include both titles aimed at children, but also texts aimed at adults with children as their focus. The authors dive in a variety of literary texts from different eras and cultures, such as J.M. Barrie’s Peter and Wendy, two of Diana Wynne Jones's Chrestomanci books, E. Nesbit's "The Town in the Library, in the Town in the Library" in juxtaposition with a text embedded in A.S. Byatt's The Children's Book, Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time, E.T.A. Hoffmann's The Nutcracker and Michael Ende's Jim Button series. With Josephine Birch’s Selkie, a wordless picture book is also given attention. Additional fields covered are role playing games from a didactic point of view and two Chucky horror movies of the Child's Play franchise. A selection of reviews on current publications completes this volume's offerings.
